I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

War, Donkeys, Children, Promises - June 26, 2011

God, teach us to focus our concerns
more on lost children than on lost donkeys.

The world is wracked with warfare—
break the bows and shatter the spears that kill
children and donkeys; put an end to war.

You will do what you have promised;
give us strength to carry through
what we have promised you.

If we trust you, we will not waver;
we will grow strong in our faith
as we give you the glory.

[The LORD] makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
      he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear;
      he burns the shields with fire.

1 Sam. 10:2
“…When you depart from me today you will meet two men by Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; they will say to you, ‘The donkeys that you went to seek are found, and now your father has stopped worrying about them and is worrying about you, saying: What shall I do about my son?’ …” [Samuel to Saul]

Rom. 4:20-21
No distrust made [Abraham] waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

Matt. 21:28-30
“What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ He answered, ‘I will not’; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, ‘I go, sir’; but he did not go. …” [Jesus to the chief priests and elders]
