I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Satisfied? --Oct. 30, 2011

God of steadfast love and mercy,
from the pit you have redeemed us.

As long as we live you satisfy us with good…
but we are not easily satisfied.

We must get grain for our sons and daughters
so that all may eat and stay alive.

We are alarmed when they fall,
even when life is still in them.

Teach us to strive for your kingdom
and to be satisfied with what you provide.

…who redeems your life from the Pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,

Neh. 5:2
For there were those who said, "With our sons and our daughters, we are many; we must get grain, so that we may eat and stay alive."

Acts 20:9-10
A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, began to sink off into a deep sleep while Paul talked still longer. Overcome by sleep, he fell to the ground three floors below and was picked up dead. But Paul went down, and bending over him took him in his arms, and said, "Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him."

Luke 12:31
"…Instead, strive for [your Father's] kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well." [Jesus to his disciples]
