I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Created for Good Works--May 18, 2012

[from May 21, 2004 archive]

You have created us for good works.
Our culture does not recognize what is good.

It praises worldly achievement, and we
imagine this will make us happy.

We deceive ourselves about what is good,
supposing that pious activities are
a substitute for discipleship.

You have created us for good works in Christ Jesus,
and we are what you have made us.

You guard the feet of your faithful ones,
for might does not prevail.

Matt. 7:22-27

Selected Verses
Ps. 49:18-19
Though in their lifetime they count themselves happy
—for you are praised when you do well for yourself—
they will go to the company of their ancestors,
who will never again see the light.

1 Sam. 2:9
"He will guard the feet of is faithful ones,
      but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness;
for not by might does one prevail. …" [Hannah's prayer]

Eph. 2:10
For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.

Matt. 7:22
"…On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?'…” [Jesus to the crowds on the mountain]
