I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Triumphant and Victorious--Nov. 25, 2012

[From Nov. 26, 2006 Archive]

Into a city all in turmoil,
he entered triumphant and victorious,
humbly riding on a donkey.
“Who is this?” asked all the people.

This is the righteous one, the King;
for us unrighteous ones he suffered,
put to death in flesh, he lives;
and to God his suffering brings us.

In the valley of darkness with us,
rod and staff protect and comfort;
our King has triumphed over death
and takes away our fear of evil.

Selected Verses

Ps. 23:4
Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
            I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
            your rod and your staff—
            they comfort me.

Zech. 9:9
Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion!
            Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem!
lo, your king comes to you;
            triumphant and victorious is he,
humble and riding on a donkey,
            on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

1 Pet. 3:18
For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God.  He was put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit…

Matt. 21:10
When [Jesus] entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, “Who is this?”
