I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

All Our Anxiety on You, O God--April 21, 2013

[from May 15, 2011 archive]

Your steadfast love endures forever.
You have rescued us from our foes, O God,

from the devil who prowls like a roaring lion;
from false prophets who have come to us in sheep’s
clothing but inwardly were ravenous wolves.

Do not sweep us away with the wicked,
even though often we are wicked, too.
Remember us in our low estate.

We cast all our anxiety on you,
knowing that you care for us.

Lectionary Readings

Ps. 93; 150; 136; 117
Gen. 18:22-33
1 Pet. 5:1-11
Matt. 7:15-29

Selected Verses

Ps. 136:23-24
It is [the LORD] who remembered us in our low estate,
            for his steadfast love endures forever;
and rescued us from our foes,
            for his steadfast love endures forever…

Gen. 18:22-23
So the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, while Abraham remained standing before the LORD.  Then Abraham came near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?  …”

1 Pet. 5:7-8
Cast all your anxiety on [God], because he cares for you.  Discipline yourselves, keep alert.  Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour.

Matt. 7:15
“…Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.  …”  [Jesus to the crowds on the mountain]
