I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

With You All Things Are Possible--June 23, 2013

 Even when mortals see no possibility,

God, with you all things are possible.

Day unto day you pour forth speech,
night to night you declare knowledge;
but we hear no speech, hear no words.

We are tested and yield to temptation;
when we experience death and failure
we conclude your glory has departed.

Then, we ask, who can be saved?
With you, all things are possible.

Selected Verses

Ps. 19:2-3
Day to day pours forth speech,
          and night to night declares knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words;
          their voice is not heard…

1 Sam. 4:21
[Eli's daughter-in-law] named the child Ichabod, meaning, "The glory has departed from Israel," because the ark of God had been captured and because of [the deaths of] her father-in-law and her husband.

James 1:12
Blessed is anyone who endures temptation.  Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Matt. 19:25-26
When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, "Then who can be saved?"  But Jesus looked at them and said, "For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible."
