I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

As We Ponder Your Steadfast Love--Jan. 2, 2014

When we ponder your steadfast love, O God,
we recognize that although we may journey
alone in the wilderness, you do not intend
we should live or die for ourselves alone.
Living with you is community venture.

Jesus was concerned over the hunger of
the crowd who came to hear his word;
we must help to feed and promote the
growth of the whole body of Christ,
building under your steadfast love.

Ps. 48:9
We ponder your steadfast love, O God,
in the midst of your temple.

1 Kings 19:4
But [Elijah] himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree.  He asked that he might die: "It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors."

Eph. 4:15-16
But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body's growth in building itself up in love.

John 6:5
When [Jesus] looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?"
