I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Jesus, Our Hands Grow Weary--May 3, 2014

Lord Jesus Christ, you have conquered
the world.  Our hands grow weary—
steady them and hold them up;
pour over us your fresh oil,
so that we may serve you
with all the strength that God
supplies, and that in all things
through you God may be glorified.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 92; 142; 23; 114
Exod. 17:1-16
1 Peter 4:7-19
John 16:16-33

Selected Verses
Ps. 92:10
But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox;
          you have poured over me fresh oil.

Exod. 17:12
But Moses' hands grew weary; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it.  Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; so his hands were steady until the sun set.

1 Peter 4:11
Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ.  To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever.  Amen.

John 16:33
“…I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace.  In the world you face persecution.  But take courage; I have conquered the world!”  [Jesus to his disciples]
