I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Rely not on Drones--Jan. 4, 2015

We take pride in technology, rely on our drones,
but it is in your name our confidence belongs.

Not that we expect you to send myriads of
holy ones, a host of your own to protect us
(for that's not your way of conquering evil);
your way is for us to know him whom you sent.

One who is from the beginning saves us from evil,
Jesus, come down from heaven and born here on earth.

Some take pride in chariots, and some in horses,
            but our pride is in the name of the LORD our God.

[Moses] said:
With [the LORD] were myriads of holy ones;

I am writing to you, fathers,
          because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young people,
          because you have conquered the evil one.

John 6:42
[The complainers] were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?  How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
