I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

We Rejoice in You, Lord Jesus--Jan. 19, 2015

We rejoice in you, Lord Jesus, and we
give thanks to your holy name.
You called those whom you wanted;
they came to you, followed you.

We believe that you have called us, too.
You have swept our transgressions
away like a cloud, our sins like a mist;
you call us to return, redeemed.

Help us grow up in every way into you,
for you are the head from whom
your whole body promotes the body's
growth, building itself up in love.

Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous,
          and give thanks to his holy name!

 I have swept away your transgressions like a cloud,
          and your sins like mist;

Eph. 4:15-16
But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.

Mark 3:13
[Jesus] went up the mountain and called to him those whom he wanted, and they came to him.
