I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

To Be Merciful, as God Is Merciful--Apr. 29, 2015

Lord Jesus, if we are to live our lives in you,
rooted and built up in you and established in faith,
then we must abound in thanksgiving--but also in mercy.

When we learn that thousands have died in earthquakes,
make us ready to heal the brokenhearted and bind
up their wounds--to have compassion on their
dwellings and to rebuild their cities.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 99; 147:1-11; 9; 118
Jer. 30:18-22
Col. 1:24-2:7

Selected Verses
Ps.147:3
[The LORD] heals the brokenhearted,
          and binds up their wounds.

Jer. 30:18
Thus says the LORD:
I am going to restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob,
          and have compassion on his dwellings;
the city shall be rebuilt upon its mound,
and the citadel set on its rightful site.

Col. 2:6-7
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Luke 6:36
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
