I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Good Teacher, a Question--Aug. 12, 2015

 [From August 12, 2009 archive]

Good Teacher, as we set out on our journey,
what shall we do to inherit eternal life?

We kneel before you to ask, not as Absalom
deceitfully prostrated himself before his father,
but because we want to know.

Keep us from following the advice of the wicked,
or taking the path that sinners tread,
or sitting in the seat of scorners.

Teach us rather to delight in following your will
and meditating on your word;
and like Mnason, may we show hospitality
to others who journey.

Selected Verses
Psalm 1:1-2
Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
            or take the paths that sinners tread,
            or sit in the seat of the scoffers;
but their delight is in the law of the LORD,
            and on his law they meditate day and night.

2 Samuel 14:33
Then Joab went to the king and told him; and he summoned Absalom.  So he came to the king and prostrated himself with his face to the ground before the king; and the king kissed Absalom.

Some of the disciples from Caesarea also came along and brought us to the house of Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we were to stay.

Mark 10:17
As [Jesus] was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
