I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Let No One Boast--Sept. 18, 2015

Your name is exalted, dear God,
your glory above heaven and earth.
Elijah the Tishbite was well known;
he had a reputation, even with the king.
It is difficult enough to let our light shine,
but what is harder still is to let it shine
for ourselves only and not for you.
But perhaps that is possible,
if we belong to Christ,
who belongs to you.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 130; 148; 32; 139
2 Kings 1:2-17
1 Cor. 3:16-23
Matt. 5:11-16

Selected Verses
Ps. 148:13
Let them praise the name of the LORD,
          for his name alone is exalted;
          his glory is above earth and heaven.

2 Kings 1:7-8
King Ahaziah said to [his messengers], “What sort of man was he who came to meet you and told you these things?”  They answered him, “A hairy man, with a leather belt around his waist.”  He said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”

1 Cor. 3:21-23
So let no one boast about human leaders.  For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all belong to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

Matt. 5:16
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”
