I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

'Only in Part' is Sufficient--Oct. 12, 2015

[From Oct. 14, 2013 archive]

Almighty God, righteousness and justice
are the foundation of your throne,

but clouds and thick darkness
are all around you.

We see dimly, know only in part,
yet know your kingdom has come near.

You have given us your word;
forbid that we should flaunt it,

for "only in part"
is sufficient.

Clouds and thick darkness are all around him;
          righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a penknife and throw them into the fire in the brazier, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier.

For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face.  Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.

"…As you go, proclaim the good news, 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.'  …"  [Jesus to his disciples, as he was sending them out]
