I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

To See what We Are Able to See--Oct. 28, 2015

Many were the prophets and righteous people, Jesus,
who longed to see what we are able to see in you
and longed to hear what we are able to hear from you.

Lord Jesus, you have opened the scroll for us--
you have made us joyful, and we celebrate
all you have done.  Let the heavens
be glad; let the earth rejoice;
let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
let the field exult, and everything in it.

Selected Verses
Ps. 96:11-12a
 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
            let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
            let the field exult, and everything in it.

Ezra 6:22
With joy [the people of Israel] celebrated the festival of unleavened bread seven days; for the LORD had made them joyful, and had turned the heart of the king of Assyria to them, so that he aided them in the work on the house of God, the God of Israel.

Rev. 5:5
Then one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep.  See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals."

Matt. 13:17
"…Truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."  [Jesus to his disciples]
