I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

To Seek the Face of God--Jan. 9, 2016

We may think you speak in secret,
O God, in darkness and chaos;
we may think it is impossible
to seek and find your face;
yet if we know Jesus,
we will know you.

But to know Jesus,
we must live our lives
in him, rooted and built up
in him--established in the faith,
and abounding in thanksgiving.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 46; 149; 27; 93
Isaiah 45:14-19
Col. 1:24-2:7
John 8:12-19

Selected Verses
Ps. 46:8
 “Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!”
          Your face, LORD, do I seek.

Isaiah 45:19a-b
I did not speak in secret,
            in a land of darkness;
I did not say to the offspring of Jacob,
            "Seek me in chaos."

Col. 2:6-7
As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

John 8:19
Then [the Pharisees] said to [Jesus], "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."
