I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

You Are Worthy, Our Lord and God--Oct. 31, 2017

Our Lord and God, you are worthy
to receive glory and honor and power;
by your will you have created all things.

Your good seeds have fallen on us, O God.
May we work diligently, and may the seeds
grow and prosper in our hands and bear fruit.

Happy are those whose help
and whose hope is in you.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 12; 146; 36; 7
Ezra 5:1-17
Rev. 4:1-11
Matt. 13:1-9

Selected Verses
Ps. 146:5
Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD their God…

Ezra 5:8
"…May it be known to the king that we went to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God.  It is being built of hewn stone, and timber is laid in the walls; this work is being done diligently and prospers in their hands.  …"  [Report sent to King Darius]

Rev. 4:10-11
…the twenty-four elders fall before the one who is seated on the throne and worship the one who lives for ever and ever; they cast their crowns before the throne, singing,
"You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they existed and were created."

Matt. 13:8
Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
