I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

In the Shadow of Your Wings--Nov. 4, 2017

Lord Jesus, you have been our help;
in the shadow of your wings we sing for joy.
Your parables help us understand what is hidden;
you shepherd us to springs of the water of life;
you console us when our hearts are broken;
and when we have no time for rest,
we rest in you.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 63; 149; 125; 90
Neh. 4:1-23
Rev. 7:4-17
Matt 13:31-35

Selected Verses
Ps. 63:7
…for you have been my help,
          and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.

Neh. 4:23
So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed me ever took off our clothes; each kept his weapon in his right hand.

Rev. 7:17
"…for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd,
          and he will guide them to springs of the water of life,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."
[One of the elders to the writer]

Matt 13:34-35
Jesus told the crowds all these things in parables; without a parable he told them nothing.  This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet:
     "I will open my mouth to speak in parables;
          I will proclaim what has been hidden from the foundation of the world."
