I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Lest Your Word Be Snatched Away--Nov. 2, 2017

To the King and to the Lamb,
blessing and honor and glory
and might forever and ever.

Dear Lord, we ask you to be attentive
to our prayers as we revere your name,
and for success in serving you this day,
and for your mercy when we fall short.

But still more importantly, we ask for your help in
hearing your word to us, for your word runs swiftly,
and whenever we fail to understand it, or attend to it,
what you have sown in our hearts is snatched away.

Rev. 5:13
Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing,
"To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb

be blessing and honor and glory and might
     forever and ever!"

Matt. 13:19
"…When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path.  …"  [Jesus to his disciples]
