I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Be Our Help and Deliverer--Feb. 2, 2018

The world hated you for testifying
against all its evil works, Lord Jesus,
but you remained subject to the Father,
trusting his steadfast love and faithfulness,
the help and deliverer of the poor and needy.
Lead us in your way, and be our deliverer, too.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 84; 148; 25; 40
Gen. 24:1-27
Heb. 12:3-11
John 7:1-13

Selected Verses
Ps. 40:17
As for me, I am poor and needy,
but the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
do not delay, O my God.

Gen. 24:26-27
The man bowed his head and worshiped the LORD and said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his steadfast love and his faithfulness toward my master.  As for me, the LORD has led me on the way to the house of my master's kin."

Heb. 12:9
Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them.  Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live?

John 7:7
"…The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its works are evil.  …"  [Jesus to his brothers]
