I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

A Door for Your Word--April 23, 2018

Moses came down from the mountain,
expecting to take your word to the people,
but was dismayed at what he saw them doing.
Jesus went up the mountain to the people,
sat down, and taught them your word.

God, your greatness is unsearchable;
open to us a door for your word,
that we may declare the
mystery of Christ.

Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain, carrying the two tablets of the covenant in his hands, tablets that were written on both sides, written on the front and on the back.  … [Moses] took the calf that [the Israelites] had made, burned it with fire, ground it to powder, scattered it on the water, and made the Israelites drink it.

Col. 4:3
At the same time pray for us as well that God will open to us a door for the word, that we may declare the mystery of Christ, for which I am in prison…

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him.
