I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

If Only I Had Understanding, God--May 27, 2018

If I had understanding,
I might know how you made
the Big Bang that founded the universe,
and how cells divide and how electrons rotate;
perhaps I could identify the rider on the white horse
who has a name inscribed that no one knows but himself
(though on his thigh is "King of kings and Lord of lords").
If only I had understanding I would know how the Spirit
descended like a dove on Jesus when he was baptized.
In all these things I have little understanding,
for I am made of dust, but I do know
that your compassion, O God,
exceeds that of any
earthly parent.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 103; 150; 117; 139
Job 38:1-11; 42:1-6
Rev. 19:4-16
John 1:29-34

Selected Verses
Ps. 103:13-14
As a father has compassion for his children,
          so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him.
For he knows how we were made;
          he remembers that we are dust.

Job 38:4
"Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
          Tell me, if you have understanding.  …"  [The LORD to Job]

Rev. 19:12, 16
[The rider of the white horse has eyes] like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems; and he has a name inscribed that no one knows but himself.  …On his robe and on his thigh he has a name inscribed, "King of kings and Lord of lords."

John 1:32-33
And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on [Jesus].  I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' … "
