I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

They Trampled on You, Jesus--June 30, 2018

Dear Jesus, the people trampled on you;
how cruelly they treated you!
Though some cheered your entry, others
raised the sword against you.

On you befell the greatest adversity,
but, by the glory of your Father,
he raised you from the dead to life.

Baptize us into your death, Jesus,
and bury our sins with you,
that we might walk with you
in the newness of life.

Be gracious to me, O God, for people trample on me;
          all day long foes oppress me…

Num. 20:14, 18
Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, "Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the adversity that has befallen us…"  But Edom said to him, "You shall not pass through, or we will come out with the sword against you."

Rom. 6:4
Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

Matt. 21:9-10
The crowds that went ahead of [Jesus] and that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David!  Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!  Hosanna in the highest heaven!"  When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, "Who is this?"
