I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

We Who Breathe, We Praise You--Aug. 26, 2018

We praise you, Holy God, our Maker;
let everything that breathes praise you.
You created all things; by your will they
existed and were created.  You live forever
and forever; you are worthy to receive glory,
honor, and power.  As for us, we are mortal--
how can we be righteous or pure before you?
You gave us Jesus; he showed us how to live,
but he was not honored; he was rejected,
even by those who knew him best.
Do not we reject him, too?
Christ, have mercy;
God, have mercy.

…the twenty-four elders fall before the one who is seated on the throne and worship the one who lives forever and ever; they cast their crowns before the throne, singing, "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created."

Then Jesus said to [the people of his home town], "Prophets are not without honor, except in their home town, and among their own kin, and in their own house."
