I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

In the Strength of Your Power, Lord--Jan. 26, 2019

Gracious God, how much you have done for me,
what mercy you have shown me!
You have delivered my soul from death,
and my feet from falling.

From my birth you have borne me,
carried from the womb;
even to my old age
you will carry, you will save.

Make me strong in you,
in the strength of your power,
that I may walk before you
in the light of life.

Selected Verses
Ps. 56:13
For you have delivered my soul from death,
          and my feet from falling,
     so that I may walk before God
          in the light of life.

Isa. 46:3-4
Listen to me, O house of Jacob,
          all the remnant of the house of Israel,
who have been borne by me from your birth,
          carried from the womb;
even to your old age I am he,
          even when you turn gray I will carry you.
I have made, and I will bear;
          I will carry and will save

Eph. 6:10
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power.

But Jesus refused, and said to [the man who had been possessed by demons], "Go home to your friends, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy he has shown you."
