I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

When We Sow Wheat and Reap Thorns--April 15, 2019

Jesus, your opponents concluded
nothing would stop your momentum,
and Paul strained forward to accelerate it,
but too often we sow wheat and reap thorns;
we tire ourselves out but profit nothing.
Remind us that we are sure to fail
unless we call on you to keep
our going out and our
coming in.

The LORD will keep
          your going out and your coming in
          from this time on and for evermore.

They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns,
          they have tired themselves out but profit nothing.

Phil. 3:13-14
Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.

The Pharisees then said to one another, "You see, you can do nothing.  Look, the world has gone after [Jesus]!"
