I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Let the Word of Christ Dwell in Us--May 18, 2019

O Most High,
you satisfy us when we are weary,
you replenish us when we are faint,
but like spoiled children we complain
that you have not done enough for us.

Let the word of Christ dwell in us
and fill our hearts with gratitude,
that in the morning we may sing
of your steadfast love, at night
sing of your faithfulness.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 92; 149; 23; 114
Jer. 31:23-25
Col. 3:12-17
Luke 7:18-35

Selected Verses
Ps. 92:1-3
It is good to give thanks to the LORD,
          to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
          and your faithfulness by night,
to the music of the lute and the harp,
to the melody of the lyre.

Jer. 31:25
 I will satisfy the weary,
and all who are faint I will replenish.
Col. 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.

Luke 7:31-32
"…To what then will I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like?  They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.' …"  [Jesus, to the crowds]
