I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

God, a Very Present Help in Trouble--June 30, 2019

God, our refuge and strength;
you are a very present help in trouble.
If we truly believed this, we would not fear;
we would not waver to tell the truth,
afraid of what others think.

Make us strong in our faith,
trusting you to do what you promise.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 67; 150; 46; 93
1 Sam. 10:1-16
Rom. 4:13-25
Matt. 21:23-32

Selected Verses
Ps. 46:1-2a
God is our refuge and strength,
          a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear…

1 Sam. 10:16
Saul said to his uncle, “He told us that the donkeys had been found.”  But about the matter of the kingship, of which Samuel had spoken, he did not tell him anything.

Rom. 4:20-21
No distrust made [Abraham] waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

Matt. 21:25-27a
“…Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?”  And [the chief priests and elders] argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ [Jesus] will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’  But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.”  So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.”
