I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

I Wait, and I Hope--Sept. 20, 2019

I wait for you, O Christ, my soul waits,
and in your word I hope.

I do not inquire of other powers, or put
all confidence in human leaders,
for I belong to you, and you
belong to God.

Fill me with your light;
may it shine before others,
and may the glory be to God.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 130; 148; 32; 139
2 Kings 1:2-17
1 Cor. 3:16-23
Matt. 5:11-16

Selected Verses
Ps. 130:5
I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope

2 Kings 1:3
But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Get up, go to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?’ …”

1 Cor. 3:16-23
So let no one boast about human leaders.  For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future — all belong to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

Matt. 5:14
“…In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”  [Jesus sitting on the mountain, to his disciples and the crowd]
