I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Victory--Oct. 23, 2019

O God in Zion,
all praise is due to you,
to you who answer prayer.

When a thing of great beauty is ruined,
those jealous of it hiss and wag their heads,
and cynics try to trip saints to take them down.

This they tried to do to Jesus, but thanks be to you;
you give us victory through him, our Lord and Christ.

Ps. 65; 147:1-11; 125; 91
Lam. 2:8-15

Selected Verses
Ps. 65:1-2a
Praise is due to you,
          O God, in Zion;
and to you shall vows be performed,
          O you who answer prayer!

Lam. 2:8-15
All who pass along the way
          clap their hands at you;
they hiss and wag their heads
          at daughter Jerusalem;
“Is this the city that was called
          the perfection of beauty,
          the joy of all the earth?”

1 Cor. 15:57
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Matt. 12:11
[Jesus] said to [those who asked if it was lawful to cure on the sabbath], “Suppose one of you has only one sheep and it falls into a pit on the sabbath; will you not lay hold of it and lift it out?  …”
