I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

The Lion Has Roared, God Has Spoken--Dec. 3, 2019

The earth is full of your steadfast love, O God,
but you are also a God of righteousness and justice.
You sent prophets to warn us about injustice,
including your Son, but the warnings
make us fearful and angry.

Instead, Lord,
make us attentive
to them, as to a lamp
shining in a dark place,
until the day dawns and the
morning star rises in our hearts.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 33; 146; 85; 94
Amos 3:1-11
2 Peter 1:12-21
Matt. 21:12-22

Selected Verses
Ps. 33:5
[The LORD] loves righteousness and justice;
          the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD.

Amos 3:8
The lion has roared;
        who will not fear?
The Lord GOD has spoken;
        who can but prophesy?

2 Peter 1:19
So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed.  You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

Matt. 21:15
But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the amazing things that [Jesus] did, and heard the children crying out in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they became angry…
