I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Be Glad and Rejoice--April 25, 2020

Lord Jesus Christ, you have conquered the world.
In you we take courage, and in you we have peace.

Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God,
may we use your gifts to us in service to others.

When our leaders grow weary in doing good,
help us to uphold them as they serve you.

May we always be glad in our Maker
and ever rejoice in you, our King.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 92; 149; 23; 114
Exod. 17:1-16
1 Peter 4:7-19
John 16:16-33

Selected Verses
Ps. 149:2
 Let Israel be glad in its Maker;
let the children of Zion rejoice in their King.

Exod. 17:11-12
Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed; and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.  But Moses' hands grew weary; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it.  Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; so his hands were steady until the sun set.

1 Peter 4:10
Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.

John 16:33
“…I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace.  In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!”  [Jesus, to his disciples]
