I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Daily Our Salvation--April 23, 2020

Blessed be your name, O God;
you give us our daily bread;
you daily bear us up;
you are our salvation.

We did not choose you;
you appointed us
to bear fruit.

We are not to return evil for evil,
nor pay back abuse with abuse,
but to repay with a blessing.

Help us so to live,
we ask in Christ’s name.

Blessed be the Lord,
          who daily bears us up;
          God is our salvation.     Selah

Exod. 16:14-15
When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground.  When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.  Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.  …”

1 Peter 3:9
Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but, on the contrary, repay with a blessing.  It is for this that you were called—that you might inherit a blessing

John 15:16
“…You did not choose me but I chose you.  And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name.  …”  [Jesus, to his disciples]
