I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Not a God of Wickedness--April 8, 2020

You do not delight in wickedness, dear God,
but I could never view you as enemy;
evil does not sojourn with you,
but you do not destroy us.

Destruction is upon us now,
of that there is no denying,
but I believe it fills you
with pain and distress
and anguish of heart.

We will yet experience your abundant love,
and it will be amazing in our eyes.

          evil will not sojourn with you.

Lam. 2:5
The Lord has become like an enemy;
         he has destroyed Israel;

         laid in ruins its strongholds,
and multiplied in daughter Judah
         mourning and lamentation.

2 Cor. 2:4
For I wrote you out of much distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain, but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.

Mark 12:1-11
“…Have you not read this scripture: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’?”  [Jesus, to his adversaries]
