I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

When the Snare Was Broken--April 13, 2020

Death passed over the door of the Israelites,
Lord Jesus, but did not pass over you.

You died a cruel death, and you were buried,
but on the third day you were raised;
the snare of death was broken.

Three loyal women saw and were amazed;
they ignored the angel’s words
and fled in terror.

And we, are we more faithful than
these faithful three?

Exod. 12:14-27
1 Cor. 15:1-11

Ps. 124:7
We have escaped like a bird
          from the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken,
          and we have escaped.

Exod. 12:23
For the LORD will pass through to strike down the Egyptians; when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over that door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you down.

1 Cor. 15:3-4
For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures…

Mark 16:7-8
“…But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you."  [An angel, to the three women]  So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
