I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

“Once God Has Spoken…”--June 18, 2020

O Sovereign God,
power belongs to you,
power and steadfast love.
Remind us of that, when we
try to lord ourselves over others.

When we fancy ourselves to be great teachers,
help us remember how we fail to teach ourselves.
When we feel smug because we are in the majority,
remind us how you leave the 99 to search for the one.

If we suppose that to be good leaders we must be proud,
bring to our minds that Moses was a very humble man.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 97; 147:12-20; 16; 62
Num. 12:1-6
Rom. 2:12-24
Matt. 18:10-20

Selected Verses
Ps. 62:11-12a
Once God has spoken;
          twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.

Num. 12:3
Now the man Moses was very humble, more so than anyone else on the face of the earth.

Rom. 2:21
…you, then, that teach others, will you not teach yourself?  While you preach against stealing, do you steal?

Matt. 18:12
“…What do you think?  If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray?  …”  [Jesus, to his disciples]
