I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Justice and Grace in the Pandemic--July 13, 2020

We know neither the day nor the hour, O God,
but by your grace, give justice to the weak
and the orphan; spare them, maintain
the right of the lowly and destitute,
and deliver their lives from death.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 5; 145; 82; 29
Josh. 2:1-14
Rom. 11:1-12
Matt. 25:1-13

Selected Verses
Ps. 82:3
“…Give justice to the weak and the orphan;
maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute.  …”
[God, to the divine council]

Josh. 2:12b-13
“…Give me a sign of good faith that you will spare my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.”  [Rahab, to the two spies she was hiding]

Rom. 11:5-6
So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.  But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

Matt. 25:13
Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
