I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Come, O God, Like the Showers--March 4, 2020

If a human ruler who wields great power

bows to public opinion in making decisions,

how much more should we be guided by you?

You have given us your Spirit to guide us;

there is nowhere we can go to escape you,

but why should we want to be without you?

You desire us to have knowledge of you;

you want us to show you steadfast love.

Come to us, O God, like the showers,

like spring rains that water the earth.

“…[the LORD] will come to us like the showers,

          the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

1 Cor. 2:11

For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within?  So also no one comprehends what is truly God's except the Spirit of God.

The king was grieved, yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he commanded [the head of John the Baptist] to be given…
