I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Lambs in the Midst of Wolves--Oct. 20, 2020

Jesus, though you send us out

like lambs in the midst of wolves,

you do not abandon us there.

You know what it is like—

a lamb surrounded by wolves—

you are our saving refuge.

Fill us with your power,

the power of your Holy Spirit,

and be our Shepherd.

Wipe every tear from our eyes;

guide us to springs of the water of life;

our salvation belongs to you.

Rev. 7:10, 17

[The multitude] cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!” …

[One of the elders said,] “…for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Luke 10:3

“…Go on your way.  See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.  …”  [[Jesus, to the seventy sent out to prepare the towns for visits from him]]
