I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

In a Weary Land, Thirsty--Nov. 28, 2020

We seek you, O God;

our soul thirsts for you

in a dry and weary land

where there is no water.

Answering our prayer,

you give us Living Water,

but we do not recognize him.

Christ comes to us as servant, not king;

we do not see, or do not want to see,

that he is in the form of God,

holy to our Lord God.

Help us acknowledge the time

of your visitation, Lord Jesus;

satisfy our thirst.

Ps. 63; 149; 125; 90

Zech. 14:12-21

Phil. 2:1-11

Luke 19:41-48

Selected Verses

Ps. 63:1

O God, you are my God, I seek you,
          my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
          as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Zech. 14:20a

On that day there shall be inscribed on the bells of the horses, “Holy to the LORD.”

Phil. 2:5-7a

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness.

Luke 19:44

“…[Your enemies] will crush you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave within you one stone upon another; because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”  [Jesus, weeping over Jerusalem]
