I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

To God’s Call, Open--Dec. 9, 2020

Holy God, make us worthy of your call.

May we not close our hearts to pity,

nor arrogantly open our mouths.

If we ourselves have not been condemned,

how can we be quick to condemn?

Open our eyes to see, our ears to hear,

that our minds may comprehend

and we may turn to be healed.

Selected Verses

Ps. 17:10

They close their hearts to pity;

with their mouths they speak arrogantly.

Isa. 6:10

“‘…Make the mind of this people dull,
          and stop their ears,
          and shut their eyes,
so that they may not look with their eyes,
          and listen with their ears,
and comprehend with their minds,
and turn and be healed.’”  [The Lord telling the prophet what to say]

2 Thess. 1:11

To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith…

John 8:10-11

Jesus straightened up and said to [the woman caught in adultery], “Woman, where are they?  Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, sir.”  And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you.  Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.”
