I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Thirsting for God--Feb. 6, 2021

Our souls thirst for you, O God;

we live in a dry and weary land,

here there is no spiritual water.

You offer prayer to everyone,

and prayer is what we need—

much comes when we  pray.

Help us live by your Spirit;

and guide us by your Spirit;

teach us the joy of praying.

Selected Verses

Ps. 63:1

O God, you are my God, I seek you,
          my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
          as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Isa. 56:7

…these [foreigners] I will bring to my holy mountain,
          and make them joyful in my house of prayer;
their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
          will be accepted on my altar;
for my house shall be called a house of prayer
          for all peoples.

Gal. 5:25

If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.

Mark 9:29

[Jesus] said to [his disciples], “This kind [of spirit] can come out only through prayer.”
