I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

To Glorify God’s Name--Feb. 14, 2021

We bless and glorify your name, O God;

all that is within us blesses your name.

You have given dominion and kingship

and glory to Christ, and through him

we have trust and confidence in you,

and in the ministry of justification.

Make us competent to serve you

and to glorify your name.

Lectionary Readings

Ps. 103; 150; 117; 139

Dan. 7:9-10, 13-14

2 Cor. 3:1-9

John 12:27-36a

Selected Verses

Ps. 103:1

Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
          bless his holy name.

Dan. 7:14a

To him was given dominion
          and glory and kingship,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
          should serve him.

2 Cor. 3:4-5, 9

Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God.  Not that we are competent of ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our competence is from God  … For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, much more does the ministry of justification abound in glory!

John 12:28

“…Father, glorify your name.”  Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”
