I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Even There, Your Hand Leads Us--Sept. 17, 2021

[Adapted from Sept. 16, 2005 archive]

If we take the wings of the morning

and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,

even there your hand shall lead us,

and your right hand shall hold us fast.

With your hand leading us,

we have no need to boast about human leaders,

for all things are ours--the world and life and death,

the present and the future--

all belong to us, and we belong to Christ,

and Christ belongs to you.

We know that all lives are precious in your sight;

let them be precious also in our sight, O God.

So let our light shine before others,

that they may see our good works

and give glory to you.

and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me fast.

Matt. 5:16
“ ...In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.  …”  [Jesus, seated on the mountain]
