I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

A Prayer for Renewal--Nov. 6, 2021

[From Nov. 7, 2009 archive;

adapted from my journal Nov. 6, 1999]

Creator God, you send forth your Spirit,

renewing the face of the ground,

also renewing our lives.

Show us your favor,

grant us sustenance,

brighten our eyes,

that we may be ready to answer your bidding,

ready to come at your command,

called and chosen and faithful.

We pray in the name

of the Lord of lords

and King of kings.

and you renew the face of the ground.

Ezra 9:8

“…But now for a brief moment favor has been shown by the LORD our God, who has left us a remnant, and given us a stake in his holy place, in order that he may brighten our eyes and grant us a little sustenance in our slavery.  …  ” [Ezra’s prayer]

Rev. 17:13-14

These [ten kings] are united in yielding their power and authority to the beast; they will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.

Matt. 14:28-29a

Peter answered [Jesus], “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”  He said, “Come.”
