I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

The Earth Is Your Temple--Jan. 15, 2022

[From Jan. 14, 2006 archive]

Creator God, in whose eyes

all creatures are naked, laid bare—

you know everything about us,

but little we know about you.

The earth is your temple,

the fruit of your work;

the birds of the air sing in branches

of trees fed by your generous streams.

Yet we, in greed and lust for power,

fill your earth with our violence,

desecrate the beautiful and holy.

You must be disappointed and angry.

Will you drive us out of the temple,

answer violence with violence?

What defense do we have, O God?

Only what you in your mercy provide—

which is all we need to know about you.

the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.

Gen. 6:13

And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence because of them; now I am going to destroy them along with the earth.  …”

And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account.

John 2:15

Making a whip of cords, [Jesus] drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle.  He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.
