I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

God, I Remember--March 1, 2022

I remember, O God, times I was weary,

and I did not know how to keep on,

and I poured out my soul to you.

I remember happier times as well,

but when I consider the value

of knowing you in Christ,

nothing else matters.

Let me remember Jesus

and listen for his voice.

Lectionary Readings

Ps. 42; 146; 102; 133

Prov. 30:1-4, 24-33

Phil. 3:1-11

John 18:28-38

Selected Verses

Ps. 42:4a

These things I remember,
as I pour out my soul…

Prov. 30:1b

Thus says the man: I am weary, O God,

I am weary, O God.  How can I prevail?

Phil. 3:8

More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ…

John 18:37

Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king.  For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.  Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
