I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Alone--Feb. 1, 2019

Evening comes, the sun is gone,
and I am all alone at sea,
Lord, without you.

But though darkness surrounds me,
and I have no light, teach me,
Christ, to trust in you.

In time of trouble, answer me;
in your name, protect me;
grant me faith in you.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 88; 148; 6; 20
Isa. 50:1-11
Gal. 3:15-22
Mark 6:47-56

Selected Verses
Ps. 20:1
The LORD answer you in the day of trouble!
          The name of the God of Jacob protect you!

Isa. 50:10
 Who among you fears the LORD
          and obeys the voice of his servant,
who walks in darkness
          and has no light,
     yet trusts in the name of the LORD
          and relies upon his God?

Gal. 3:22
But the scripture has imprisoned all things under the power of sin, so that what was promised through faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

Mark 6:47
When evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and [Jesus] was alone on the land.

  1. It makes me sad to think of you feeling so alone. My prayers are for you tonight, my friend.
