I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Better than Life, God's Steadfast Love--March 2, 2019

Not only is your steadfast love better than life,
it is in this love that we find life eternal.
How to maintain our name on our inheritance,
or the wasting away of our outer nature,
or even the reward we will receive in heaven--
all these pale in importance compared
to the sure knowledge of your steadfast love.

Lectionary Readings
Ps. 122; 149; 100; 63
Ruth 4:1-22
2 Cor. 4:13-5:10
Matt. 6:1-6

Selected Verses
Ps. 63:3
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
          my lips will praise you.

Ruth 4:5
Then Boaz said [to Naomi's next of kin], "The day you acquire the field from the hand of Naomi, you are also acquiring Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the dead man, to maintain the dead man’s name on his inheritance."

2 Cor. 4:16
So we do not lose heart.  Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.

Matt. 6:6
"…But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you."  [Jesus to the crowd on the mountain]
