I am an emeritus professor from Cornell University and was a Commissioned Lay Preacher in the Presbyterian Church (USA). For many years I have followed the Daily Lectionary as printed in the Mission Yearbook of my church. For each day of a two-year cycle, the lectionary lists four psalms and three other scriptural passages--usually one from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament. My practice is to copy down a verse or two from one of the psalms and from each of the other three passages. After I have written out all four selections, I reflect upon them, rearrange their order, and incorporate them into a meditation. Sometimes I retain much of the original wording; sometimes all that remains of a selection is an idea that was stimulated when I read the original words. All selections are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. For the Daily Lectionary, see the link below.

Lord, Make Us Wise, but…--Jan. 21, 2021

Lord, make us wise, but give us respect

for the limits of our knowledge.

Lord, make us wise, but to do good,

not mischief or deceitfulness.

Lord make us wise, but not to forget

that we need you, our Maker.

Lord make us wise, but remind us—

nothing hides from your eyes.

Lectionary Readings

Ps. 36; 147:12-20; 80; 27

Isa. 45:5-17

Eph. 5:15-33

Mark 4:21-34

Selected Verses

Ps. 36:2-3

For they flatter themselves in their own eyes
that their iniquity cannot be found out and hated.
The words of their mouths are mischief and deceit;
they have ceased to act wisely and do good.

Isa. 45:9

Woe to you who strive with your Maker,
          earthen vessels with the potter!
Does the clay say to the one who fashions it, “What are you making”?
or “Your work has no handles”?

Eph. 5:15-16

Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil.

Mark 4:22

“…For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light.  …”  [Jesus, to his disciples]
